If you are familiar with cannabis, chances are you’ve heard about the basics, such as Indica, Sativa and Hybrid strains, and cannabinoids such as THC & CBD. Terpenes are naturally occurring compounds that are responsible for the aroma of many plants, and contribute to their unique flavour. Whether a cannabisuer or totally new to the weed game, the majority can identify that distinct aroma of cannabis. Sometimes described as dank, gassy, or even skunky, the indisputable smell of weed is brought to us by, that’s right – terpenes.

From trees, to flowers and herbs, terpenes are found in all of them. Using the aromatic properties of terpenes is actually not a new concept. They have been used in many applications, from perfumes, cosmetics, insect repellants down to essential oils, the fragrant aromas that are enjoyed daily can be associated back to individual terpene profiles.

A common terp in cannabis strains such as Lemon Z, is Limonene. When Limonene is used as an essential oil, it can provide an uplifting mood boost. That same positive mood benefit that the limonene offers in the essential oil, is the same benefit when found in Cannabis products. A common question about them is “Will the terpenes get you high?” No, it is the THC that gets you stoned, but understanding the terpenes will help one tailor the nature of their high.

If you’ve ever noticed little glandular hairs covering your bud with a sparkling crystal like finish, those are Trichomes. Trichomes have resin glands which is where both terpenes and cannabinoids THC and CBD are produced. When it comes to weed, Terps and Cannabinoids (THC/CBD) have a mutually beneficial relationship. The combination of the two is a major influence in giving each cannabis strain its’ unique profile. In each strain there can be multiple terpenes, all with different amounts present.

Caryophyllene
Caryophyllen has been known to be a stress-relieving terpene. Cannabis strains with high Caryophyllene have a distinct funk and musky aroma.
Myrcene
Myrcene is known for its sedating, relaxing effects, more often than not if a strain is high in Myrcene it is typically an Indica dominant strain.
Pinene
Aside from delivering the distinct forest-like fragrance, pinene has many potential therapeutic properties. Most notable is Anti-inflammatory effects.
Limonene
Limonene is known for its uplifting mood boosting effects.
Linalool
The Linalool terpene has an effect on the serotonin receptor. Linalool is known to have a relaxing effect.
Humulene
Humulene gives off earthy, woody, and spicy notes. Fun fact, this is the same terpene that gives hoppy beers their distinct taste.
Terpinolene
Terpinolene is found in many strains, however, mostly in smaller quantities. It is believed to have uplifting effects.
